BHC Press to Publish the Upcoming YA Series Whiteland by Rosie Cranie-Higgs

Three worlds. One mistake. Grudges, a perverted sense of justice, and a lot of angry ghosts.

BHC Press announced today they will be publishing the upcoming young adult series Whiteland by Rosie Cranie-Higgs. The Whiteland trilogy starts with a trip to the forest…and then the worlds collide. Blending European folk traditions with magic, mind games, and ghostly adventure, the series sees Kira try to save what she knows, while the monsters close their claws.

rosie_cranie-higgs“The seeds of Whiteland were sown in one moment—stumbling across a film called The Changeling. I didn’t watch the film, but googled changelings…and that snowballed into a love of creepy European folklore. Combine that with an extremely snowy winter break at home in Switzerland, the artwork of Kay Nielsen, and a collection of tales called East of the Sun and West of the Moon, and I had the beginnings of a dark, wintry, supernatural adventure,” says author Rosie Cranie-Higgs when asked about her inspiration behind the trilogy. “It was never meant to be a series, but I couldn’t let the characters go. Or rather, they wouldn’t let me, no matter how much mind-bending magic I threw at them.”

The trilogy opens with Whiteland, the same name of the series, and will be followed by Karliquai (book two) and will conclude with Memento Mori. Publication for Whiteland is slated for 2020.

A look inside the upcoming Whiteland:

‘You’re only going to get burned.’

‘By what?’

‘Monsters,’ she calls into the night. ‘And girls who go looking for them.’

In a lonely mountain village, Kira’s holiday erupts. It’s winter, it’s eerie, and out in the woods, something imbeds its claws in her sister.

When Romy returns, she’s different. She’s violent, inhuman, and by rights, should be dead, but all their parents care about is that she’s still alive. That is…until their parents disappear.

‘You can’t go back.’ The short words jerk. Her grimace grows in grooves, her eyes rogue and gaping. ‘You can’t go back to Whiteland.’

In the otherworldly winter, Kira starts to pry. The village keeps secrets. Her mother’s told lies. Alongside sarcastic Scotsman Callum, Kira stumbles upon the folkloric world eating all she knows. If she runs away, she’ll be safe. If she doesn’t, her family might survive.

Whiteland doesn’t want her. It wants to hide its beauty, and its beasts, and its tricks. In the end, there’s no mercy in revenge.

About Rosie Cranie-Higgs: Rosie Cranie-Higgs is an English writer obsessed with folklore, wine, bullfinches, and the magical worlds inside her head. Having always wanted to be an author, her first “book” was completed at the age of eight—a Lord of the Rings-inspired adventure involving her favorite band (Busted), a supernatural quest, and many dark, ghostly mishaps. One day, she wants to visit all major cities and try their food. She grew up across Europe, and now lives in Lally, Switzerland, the alpine village where Whiteland is set.
