When it comes to “what to read next?” our staff has it covered! BHC Press staff members are bringing their favorite reads to you.

Chelsea Cambeis is the Lead Editor as well as a member of the Acquisitions team at BHC Press.

Chelsea lives in north central West Virginia, where she received her BA in English with a minor in Technical Writing from Fairmont State University, and doesn’t go a day without drinking tea, reading, or breaking a sweat. She’s passionate about the Oxford comma and spoiling her dog, Chan.

There’s nothing she finds more rewarding than assisting authors in developing their very best work. She’s always on the lookout for fresh fantasy, complex thrillers, and modern contemporary fiction with depth. She’s a sucker for morally gray characters she can’t help but love, new universes beyond her imagination, characters with baggage, and forbidden love.

Rebirth

Bets Davies

I can’t praise Rebirth enough. It’s been nearly a year since I read this novel by Bets Davies, and the characters are still coming to mind at random—a great testament to what a master Bets is when it comes to crafting complex, memorable characters.

Along with characters you won’t be able to get enough of, Rebirth boasts a rich sense of place and a fantasy plot jam-packed with pop culture references and suspense, thanks to the menacing necromancer pursuing our group of main characters.

To top it all off, Davies’s novel is a place for inclusion and representation, as well as commentary on important topics for all readers, including sexual fluidity; mental illness; archaic beliefs still present in today’s society, especially when it comes to women’s rights; and the importance of independence in relationships.

A balanced mishmash of contemporary romance, fantasy, and horror, this book is as swoon-worthy as it is frightening and enlightening. Take it from me, Rebirth has it all.
